PROFILE: OLLIE MURPHY

Ollie Murphy is a London based illustrative artist and photographer. Ollie is really into documenting life. Ollie has an accidental ‘Fuck Society’ mentality & is a frequent face in London’s punk music scene. We really like Ollie. Q. 3 words that sum you up?A. Disorganised, Daydreamer, Obsessive. Q. How did you get into photography & what inspires you?A. I studied an illustration course at arts school, one day we had a photography lesson by a tutor called Dave Hendley...The way he described the act of photography and the way he explained images really excited me.The second i left that lecture i went to a shit camera shop on my street and bought a 35mm camera and loads of rolls and i've been shooting ever since everyday and that was 5 years ago! Two of my favourite photographers are Daido Moriyama & Shomei Tomatsu. I'm majorly inspired by them. Lots of things inspire me, i really love painting even though i hardly ever paint anymore. Id like to think some of my photos have elements of painting in them, such as expressive marks.. But people inspire me whether i draw, photograph or whatever - my work is always figurative.  Q. What is your favourite subject to capture?A. My favourite subject to capture is people definitely. There are tons of different ways people shoot photos i never really had a project in mind i carry a camera everywhere with me and i'm just really into documenting life. It's something i have to do.It's like a diary for me that influences my drawing also.Q. Your pictures have a distinct unreformed attitude, kind of like a 'fuck you' to society, how do you liken that to your art?A. I don't know i try not to over analyse anything i do too much or fall into a headspace of 'why even bother making art'. I have that mentality about society and life anyway so i guess its just accidentally expressed through my photos. Happy accidents.Q. What can you tell us about the London punk music scene and hows this influences your work?A. My work is my work and i've been involved in going to punk shows and being in bands and designing records ever since i was about 15 so it just falls into my work. Again - happy accidents. Q. On that note... records on repeat?A. Best punk bands in the UK right now are Anxiety and Public Service. Been playing them on repeat for weeks. My favourite records ever are... Christian Death - Only Theatre of Pain, Ian Dury - New Boots & Panties, The Streets - Original Pirate Material, anything by Lungfish, Iggy & The Stooges, Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs. And a million more.

PROFILE: ELLA JANE

PROFILE: ELLA JANE

Ella was born in England and moved to Byron Bay when she was 10, She is 19 and has been non-stop travelling over the past 2 years taking photos of her friends along the way...  Q. 3 words that sum you up? A. Sarcastic, Creative, Impulsive. Q. How did you get into photography & what inspires you?A. I started taking photos when I was travelling a lot last year. I decided to bring a little film camera along with me to just document fun moments or things I found visually pleasing. I felt I wanted something to show for my trips rather than just iPhone pictures, film somewhat feels more sentimental. I'm inspired by my friends, who are all somehow ridiculously good-looking; I'm inspired by the way my photos come out when I'm in different cities or countries, they tend to emulate different vibes which I find really interesting. I'm not trying to stick to a certain aesthetic or style, I just want to document real moments and I suppose that's what people appreciate because it's not supposed to be serious.  Q. Your images kinda capture the subject as if we know them... and have that raw and real quality of today’s youth, what does that mean to you - today’s youth and how that translates through your images?A. The idea of 'Today's youth' is a concept that I often struggle with. I think that shooting on film can come with this idealised aesthetic, I know that this is why I was initially drawn to it. However, my work is a direct reflection of my lifestyle and you will see that in my images. So it translates that way because it is genuine. I really am just here to take pictures of my friends having fun, I am a part of their life as both a fixture and a reflection. Even when I shoot girls for a story or interview I will try to make sure that the subject is being as authentic as possible, because at the end of the day I'm not trying to contrive any kind of alternate story. I think that people are far more interesting when things are stripped back. Sometimes I even go to take a photo of someone and if I feel like they are posing too much I either tell them to relax or simply don't end up taking the picture. I'm not really interested in who you want to be, I'm interested in who you were before you realised that I had a camera pointed at you. >

PROFILE: JESS KOHL

PROFILE: JESS KOHL

We first discovered Jess's work via a series called 'Friends of the Dead'- featuring portraits of individuals who work and volunteer in Londons' most famous Victorian cemeteries, known collectively as the 'Magnificent Seven'.Instantly intrigued we reached out to Jess... 1. How did you get into photography & what inspires you? I got into photography through wanting to capture and communicate to the world, photography seemed like the most natural way to do so. As i continued my practice i found the medium that worked best for me, which is currently black and white medium format photography; i process my film at home, and then scan in the negatives, and love the ability to do the whole process start to finish, it’s really satisfying.   2. The macabre quality in your work leaves a lasting impression, has this been something you have always been interested in and what draws you to it? I have always been interested in the macabre, the darker side of things, since i was a kid and wanted to hear the same scary bedtime stories again and again. As i’ve grown older this has developed into a love for everything that surrounds death and mortality; particularly i am interested in memento mori objects like mourning jewellery and costume, i’m fascinated by cultures who celebrate or particularly fear death, hence my most recent project ‘Friends of the Dead’, which celebrates London’s beautiful Victorian cemeteries.  I am moved by photographers and story tellers who capture death in their work, be this photographers like Nan Goldin, who documented the lives and deaths of her friends and community, or Robert Mapplethorpe who used skull imagery and esoteric symbolism in his work; i guess i’m interested in their ability to make me question my own mortality. I aim to do the same, whilst creating beautiful imagery. I think shooting on black and white automatically gives my work a kind of gothic quality.  Shop Jess's picks online here
