Family Ties: Alexa Roetger

Meet Alexa. Part of the beautiful team at Aesthetica and our key to the fountain of youth. Not only is she a talent and a half, but her unique, modern style is one we love. We took 5 with Alexa at Aesthetica to find out more about her life, the world of beauty, plus get some insight into her style.  SHOP ALEXA'S FAVOURITES NOW Tell us a little bit about what you do: I am a Cosmetic Nurse Injector and Business Owner of Aestheticá Byron Bay. My days are spent mostly doing cosmetic injectables; Dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, chin sculpting or fat dissolving injections and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injecting and needling. I also still work as a registered nurse for an agency from time to time to keep my nursing skills up-to-date. How did you get into beauty? It had always been a long-term goal of mine to move out of primary nursing care to something more passive while still very patient care orientated. I love looking after people and making them feel good, hence the skin and aesthetic medicine industry has always interested me. The way I treat my clients is, as a whole, looking at the body as one large organism rather than different compartments. My goal was to create an intimate, beautiful and zen space with result driven treatments for patients from all demographics. What part of your work do you love the most? Why? The best part of my job is seeing my clients' reactions when their treatment results exceed their expectations, especially when I have treated something that has bothered them for a long time. Getting results gives me such a high, nothing really compares. Describe your style in 3 words. 1. Tomboy (80% boy, 20% girl) 2. Constantly changing 3. Chameleon  How has your style changed from when you first started until now? I have always been a bit of a chameleon, suiting my style to my surroundings or demographic that I'm living in at the time. I've always adjusted my style and adopted my own flare I suppose. I have certainly come a long way from my high waisted baby blue leather shorts and tight tops of years ago! Tell us a bit about how you style your outfits. I always try to wear conflicting styles together and pray that it works in my favour. My husband’s favourite statement is "but they don’t really go together". I am also a sucker for full matching outfits, too. Tell us a little bit about living in Byron Bay? How long have you been living here? Any tips? etc. I met my husband while visiting on a night out 9 years ago and been here ever since. We live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, so I guess my best advice is to not get too bitter with all the people visiting. Try and take it as a compliment, rather than personally. What’s a typical day-in-the-life of Lex look like? Yoga at Creature Walk my dogs Coffee always Working in clinic  Then usually try do some sort of activity to wind down after a long day. Infrared sauna at Nimbus & Co if I have had a long day and need a little energy boost. Or recently I have taken up skate boarding, wrist guards and all ;)  What do you do in your spare time? Haha I used to have a lot more of it! When I am not in clinic I try and see as much live music as humanly possible. I also try and drive down the Gold Coast when I have a few days up my sleeve to get some space from our little Byron bubble. I spend a lot of my spare hours furthering my aesthetic studies, there is always room to learn - I love to study. Some things inspiring you right now: A close friend of mine was recently injured in a massive car accident - she virtually broke every bone in her body. She has had such a long road to recovery and I find her resilience to be so incredibly inspiring.  She has come leaps and bounds, despite her injuries, and watching her recovery is so humbling.  Music you’re listening to right now:  Haha I tend to always lean toward old pop punk but I feel like I have a pretty fast palate when it comes to music. At the moment… Ceres, Luca Brasi, Beach Slang, Slowly Slowly, Flying Machine, Modern Baseball, PLTS, Lime Cordiale are my highest rotation when looking at my Spotify. 2019 goals/plans/something you want to speak into existence: Just looking forward to cultivating my business and watching it grow. I have been blown away by the amount of support we have had so far in our local community. I have been working with some amazing mentors and leaders in the aesthetics industry, learning from my peers and always furthering my education in my field. I am also so grateful for all the amazing relationships that I have developed with my clients over the past three months, and on the home front - the dream is to eventually move out to hills and adopt way too many animals. Thrills Radio 7.0 - Curated by Leroy Francis

Thrills Radio 7.0 - Curated by Leroy Francis

Meet Leroy Francis. Not just a good friend of ours, but a charming multi-instrumentalist from Sydney. We sat down with Leroy to ask him a few q's about his past, present and future. Get to know him here: Nat: So you’re the poster boi for our 'Intoxicated Dreams' campaign - But you’re not a model, are you Roy? You’re a musician. Tell us a little bit about you. Leroy: I’m, not even a model citizen… I sling beers in a bar, watch films from dusk til dawn, spend the days trying to write music and repeat it all again. Nat: Can you tell me a little bit about how you got in to music and a little bit about your musical journey so far? Leroy: I got in a lot of trouble at school so I was assigned to a school councillor who happened to be a music teacher. She got me in to music as a way of getting out some energy. I played with my mates in a band called Cabins which was doing ok for a bit but we fucked around too much and all got habits that stopped us from progressing. That’s when I moved to NYC. Nat: And that’s how the new band (Leroy Francis) came about? Leroy: Yeah. I spent a few months in a studio in NYC where The Strokes recorded “Is This It”. There was a black out for 2 weeks while I was in there, so I lived in total darkness for that time, just trying to play drums as much as I could to stop me from being spooked. When I moved back to Australia I moved in to a shed in Camden and continued to record songs. I released those puppies and then got all my favourite musicians together to play them live. Nat: What are you listening to at the moment? And what inspires you, musically? Leroy: I never listen to music that is similar to the music I make. Mostly I juggle between early noughties stuff like, 'Dancing in the Moonlight' (Toploader’s version) and punk like, Death Grips. Inspiration-wise, I get a lot of ideas from film soundtracks and scores. Nat: What are you into outside of music? Leroy: I’m a film buff. I like literature, but my eyes are giving up on me so reading has become more and more of a chore. Horror films in particular I think are the best. If a film can make you terrified to be alone in house with locked doors, then you know it’s good baby. Nat: Nice. Me too. Ok, so you’re pretty well known for breaking bones and serious injuries. What’s the deal? Leroy: A lot of people think I’m unlucky. But hey, I’m part of the 1% of people who survive after being hit by a bus. So you do the math, babe. I guess I spend a lot of time out of the house and have a reckless and self destructive streak. Mix that with stupidity, and you get yourself some decent injuries. Nat: What’s next for the band? Future plans are to just repeat what I’ve done already, but in quicker succession. As well as touring. I plan to have another record out this year. The Wrap Up: Tim Caraco's 'Freedom Machines'

The Wrap Up: Tim Caraco's 'Freedom Machines'

Late last year, many of us sadly lost a dear friend. Tim Caraco was an endlessly talented photographer and an immensely charismatic personality. Tim captured chopper subculture not just here in Australia but also on an international scale. For many years Tim worked tirelessly with his camera in order to bring people together with his imagery. His passion for motorcycles put him at the forefront of his peers, and firmly engrained him into the minds of the masses.  Tim’s documentation of choppers now gives us all a chance to live in the shoes of those who live and breath these machines. From long nights in the garage to long days on the open road.  We were proud to work alongside Tim’s family and friends to hold a one night only exhibition to feature some of Tim's favourite visuals from around Australia and the globe. Tim will continue to live on through these shared works. See what we got up to below.   Didn't make it to the exhibition? Tim's artwork and books are available to purchase here. HUGE THANK YOU TO: Photos: Benson Keers Food: The Wiener Haus Drinks: Byron Bay Brewery Live music: Daisy Brains

Family Ties: Yeah, Nice Gallery

Family Ties: Yeah, Nice Gallery

Meet Holly and Jordi from Yeah, Nice Gallery. A sweet little gallery based in Mullumbimby; this art space has quickly become a well-known name to Byron Bay locals. We took 5 with owners and curators, Hol and Jordi, to find out more about them, art, plus get some insight into their styles.  SHOP HOLLY & JORDI'S FAVOURITES NOW Tell us a little bit about yourselves: Holly - I'm Holly and run the Yeah Nice Gallery along with my mate, Jordi. I'm also a freelance designer and mum to 2 year old, Della. How did Yeah Nice Gallery come about? Jordi - I'm pretty sure the idea came about from sitting on Holly's couch complaining about  the work/ mum life juggle and that there was such a lack of cool things to do on a Friday night.  Holly - We were toying with the idea for a gallery for a while but never thought it would ever actually happen. Then, a space freed up and we thought, 'it's now or never!" Have you both always been interested in art? Holly - Yes, I think that's fair to say. Jordi - Since before I can remember... I have made art since I was maybe about 4 years old and went to art school for 4 years. What does the future hold for Yeah, Nice? Holly - With the gallery only being open for about 6 months, we are hoping to just keep it rolling along, with about one solo artist show per month. We also want to be a go-to hire space for workshops and other cool things.  Jordi - Cant wait for the rest of our first year to unfold and for us to introduce you to some amazing art by amazingly talented artists... we also have some drawing workshops and other bits and pieces coming up! Describe your style in 3 words. Holly - Simple, loose, utilitarian Jordi - Confused, comfortable and "un-sexy".  How has your style changed from when you first started until now? Holly - It hasn't! Tell us a bit about how you style your outfits.  Holly - It has to be comfy and practical. Jordi - I guess I usually get dressed in according to how I feel... which is usually a "just want to feel comfortable and confident" kind of mood.  Tell us a little bit about living in Byron Bay? How long have you been living here? Any tips? etc. Holly - I've been here for 9 years (with a one year stint in Sydney to break it up), but only lived in Byron for about 3 or 4 years, we are in Banaglow now and love it. Tips? Find like minded people to surround yourself with, constantly explore the beauty around you and remember what brought you here in the first place.  Jordi - I've lived in this area for almost 10 years now. Not too sure I have any tips as its much like living anywhere else. We actually live just outside of Byron and really try not to make it into town too much as it has definitely changed a lot in the last 10 years.  What’s a typical day-in-the-life of Jordi and Holly look like? Holly - On a day off our little girl wakes us up early, I will probably pretend to be asleep until her dad gets up and makes her brekky! We'll go and get coffee together then head to the beach or somewhere where we can all let off some steam, head home for lunch, then spend the arvo relaxing and drinking beers, maybe have some friends over for dinner. A working day look much different, with some sort of combination of lots of computer time for me, trying to constantly distract Della with activities and falling in a heap at the end of the day. Jordi - If I am not working.. Coffee! Always first!...... then food, beach, beers .... repeat? What do you do in your spare time? Holly - Hang out with my family. Jordi - Paint, spend time with my family, usually at the beach or on our little adventures away... Holly and I also spend a lot of our free time together. Some things or people inspiring you right now: Holly - Inspired by people doing what they love and making a difference. Jordi - I am constantly inspired by the people around me for all sorts of different reasons... Friends that live close and are kick ass business people or friends that have moved away and are living it up in the big city! I am also forever inspired by the works that are being exhibited at Yeah Nice... these artists have a lot to say and I am pretty stoked that we can help them to do that.  Music you’re listening to right now:  Holly - Woods, Rolling Blackouts, Sharon Van Etten and Nick Cave, always. Jordi - I am on a bit of a Devendra Banhart binge at the moment.  2019 goals/plans/something you want to speak into existence: Holly - The year has gone so fast, I just want to enjoy the rest of it and keep the good things rolling for Yeah Nice, as long as people keep coming, we will be happy! Jordi - To keep showing amazing art at the gallery and to watch Yeah, Nice Gallery grow and evolve.

Boogie Festival with James Adams

Boogie Festival with James Adams

By James Adams. ‘Magic Dirt’ in crowd. The ‘Club House’ Some tasks come with a certain pressure from fear of not doing justice to its amazingness. Writing about Boogie festival is one such task. I’m going to give you two breakdowns of Boogie. A brief one and a meandering attempt at opening a window to what the Boogie experience is like. 1. Boogie is a music festival in Victoria that all in attendance camp at. Caravan club. Dusty figures. 2. Arriving to the farm fills the belly with butterflies. On one hand, it’s because you know what’s ahead, and on the other hand, it’s because you’ve got no idea what’s ahead. Around 2,000 people slowly populate the paddocks and hills with their campsites. Some as basic as a swag beside a Harley, some as elaborate as a seasoned camp dad’s tent city with functioning shower, kiddie pool, ping pong table, couches, kitchens etc. You want it to be comfy because this will be the home to so many great times, hilarious times, in the 3 days ahead. Simple Bikers Camp. Sunset viewing deck. Once your camp is established and you’re all set up you’ll find yourself at an extremely exciting point in time. This is the starting point of what will become the next few days. Not, 3 days, the next 3 days. In weeks and months to come when you look back, you’ll remember setting up camp but everything after that is difficult to pin point to a specific time. It becomes a happy mess of memories. Ozzy Wright from the Goons of Doom & Eamon from The Chats. You’ll be drifting through days in unrecognisable states of adrenaline and/or exhaustion and be constantly bewildered by what has just happened and unable to predict what is about to happen. Retreating to your camp before dusk for a cheeky cocktail and to upgrade clothing to cold weather wear, you find a minute to yourself and feel a memory of your childhood that you’d previously forgotten. Not a visual memory, just a feeling of total freedom and lack of responsibility or pressure that only that time of life could deliver. It’s a feeling you’d wish to grip and hold but the sun is setting and right now needs to be gripped as well so you’re required to snap out of it and proceed with the present and try to remember that feeling next week when you’re back living in reality. Ali Wells & Ben Marwe from Bad Dreems. Zach from Hockey Dad with Ali Wells from Bad Dreems. Watching bands and watching people you soon understand that nobody is on a clock. Nobody doesn’t want to be exactly where they are. It’s time for yourself to do as you please. Whatever you want. You are free and that might be one of Boogie’s greatest secrets. There is no fear. This is the vibe that has been orchestrated when 13 years ago a handful of mates, all with deep roots in the music industry, decided to make their own festival. Calling it a festival is taking the easy way out. It’s more than that. The music is just one facet of Boogie that everything revolves around like a sun. Pricey and Bogis from The Chats with the legendary James Young.  James Bartold from Bad Dreems. Glen Dickey from Music Australia. With no corporate sponsors to appease the parameters of what they can do is limitless. Eg. Having an equally large stage in an amphitheatre purely for the afterparty every night, why not? Perhaps a full time, 2 storey Western Saloon style Club House that plays host to a High Tea, a Karaoke Bar, a Cocktail Lounge and hosts a full blown kids concert for the little Boogers, done! Country Music playing over the speakers every morning to gently wake your battered soul and blistered ears, sure! A shipping container decked out with mirrored walls and a DJ booth half buried in a hill over the back of the property only operating after the after party and not spoken about or advertised at all? of course…. And to top it all off. Boxwars! Hundreds of lunatics decked out in themed cardboard costumes causing havoc and demolishing each other to old timey war music and the commentary of a quick lipped cowboy… As I said, there is no limit. BOXWARSSS!!! Cowboy with Vaughan, Ozzy and Killer from the Goons of Doom. The day time is practically recovery time very well disguised as entertainment. Once the sun sets magically over the rolling hills each night, eyes glaze over with a film of excitement, wonder and under the cover of darkness the world opens up into a void of what the fuck is about to happen. And every night is different. Maclay Herriot. Mel and Rhiannon.  Boogie will take you back in wondering if this is what fun used to be like and it’ll take you forward in pondering if this is the future. Days stop, night can last forever and the moon is massive 100% of the time. It’ll either act as a stimulant for mood and behaviour or at least be an excuse for your actions. Like mistaking a caravan for a toilet. Eamon from The Chats. Monte from The Delta Riggs. The Chats and Maclay Herriot. If it turns out that there is someone looking down and watching over all of us, i’m not sure if they’d be confused, fascinated, worried, thrilled or amazed but i know they’d be entertained. I sure as shit was and I’ll pair what memories I’ve made at Boogie with the photos I took and hold onto them as some of the greatest times of my life. Alex Cameron from Bad Dreems. Ozzy from the Goons of Doom with the major of Byron Bay, Paul McNeil. Does that make sense? Maybe, maybe not. It probably will make more sense if you’ve been. Cheers Mate! 3 Netflix Shows For Your Sunday Hangover

3 Netflix Shows For Your Sunday Hangover

By James Gallagher. What a world we live in huh? The pedo priests are throwing millions of dollars at their defence attorneys while our politicians are still up for sale to the highest bidder. So for the rest of us, there’s letters from the tax office, increased living expenses and avocado toast. Thoughts and prayers people, thoughts and prayers. If you're anything like me, these happenings are likely to drive you straight to the nearest pub and once the booze fuelled charisma has worn off, what’s left to wash the hangover away? It’s Netflix and chill, whether that ‘chill’ means what it’s meme’d to or the more accurate version of us trying to tap-out from the shit-show for a few measly few hours, I’ve compiled the perfect hangover list of Netflix series that might help to take your mind off the madness for a moment. Detectorists This charming British comedy doesn’t seem like much to begin with but it’s an absolute joy to watch. Written by and starring Mackenzie Crook (‘Gareth’ from the U.K. version of The Office) and featuring Toby Jones in a rare comedic role, this is an endearing series about two metal detectors (Detectorists, they’ll tell you) and their unremarkable adventures searching for riches of the past. As they navigate the trials of a life lived a world-away from the ritz and glitz of the big smoke, this Netflix series will have you laughing in the most heart warming way possible. The British countryside and quiet serenity sets the pace in this series as these two mid-life mates search for the big haul and impart their ordinary wisdom and wit upon their friends in the Danebury Metal Detecting Club. This is the perfect series for the worst of hangovers. The characters are so endearing you just want to hug them and the total banality of small-town life in this series is the perfect tempo for those slower days in bed. As Andy (Crook) and Lance (Jones) while away their spare time searching for that elusive haul we’re treated to one of the most on-point portrayals of life for the rest of us. This isn’t fast-moving, blink and you’ll miss it storylines or rapid-fire barbs, it's so real it hurts and the nuance of the dialogue hits you right in the feels. It’s part comedy, part real-life drama and if Toby Jones as Lance isn’t one of the most loveable performances you could ever hope for, you can count more than just a hangover amongst your problems. F is for Family From the mind of Bill Burr comes F is for Family, probably one of the more honest depictions of life in the 70’s that no-one from that era would probably care to admit. It centres on Frank Murphy, a foul-mouthed veteran and his family as they traverse through an era when drinking, misogyny and rock n’ roll ruled the world. This is not the series to watch if your partner is trying to get some sleep or you’re feeling a little tender - it’s loud and yelling is how half the characters get their point across. As far as comedy goes this sitcom is spot-on, there’s no real star of the show and a star-studded cast of actors bring this thing to life - Sam Rockwell as a coked-out Matthew McConaughey-ish radio host steals nearly every scene he’s in). There’s plenty of great adult-animated comedy on Netflix at the moment but this one may have fallen through the cracks and it deserves a watch. If you like your Big Mouth, Archer or BoJack Horsemen you’ll love F is for Family, and if you haven’t caught any of the aforementioned they’re just as worthy of your time. Arrested Development This is an easy one. If you haven’t already copped this seminal comedy series you’ve either been in hiding or as ignorant as the idiots that inhabit this California-based comedy. It’s the story of a well-to-do family thrust into chaos due to their own stupidity and greed and is without a doubt, one of the best-written comedies of the past two decades. Fourth season aside, (seriously did they cast a Portia De Rossi wax museum reject in her place?) this show is razor-sharp and gets ever-better with each re-watch. This should be the comedy that all others are measured by and its baffling they only got to three seasons before being cancelled in its prime (There’s an epic rant from actor David Cross somewhere on the internet which sums it up that's well worth a look). Yes, this is old news but if there’s ever a comedy worth watching or diving back in to, Arrested Development is it. Far ahead of its time, this is pure comedy gold. Well there you go. That should be roughly 1-2 straight months of Netflix binge viewing to completely cloak yourself from the outside world. Things may not have improved out here by the time you re-emerge but at least you’ll have a couple of extra laughter wrinkles when you do. - Jimmy
