Q&A with LA Photographer, Kristin Gallegos ⚡️

Q&A with LA Photographer, Kristin Gallegos ⚡️

Kristin Gallegos is living our ultimate LA dream. Drawing inspo from the 60s and 70s, her work is nothing short of iconic. As soon as we saw her polaroids and film work, we were instantly hooked. We know you will be too. We sat down with Kristin, amongst her chaotic, creative, whirlwind of a life, and asked her a few questions about her work and life.      How did you get into photography? My background is actually in makeup. I was a makeup artist for a long time and about 4 years ago I started to burn out. I was creatively unfulfilled and just decided to get a 35mm film camera for fun. All my friends are such babes and creatives so I would just take photos of them when we were hanging out. Nothing staged. I always had my camera on me. I also had a couple of polaroid cameras that I’ve had since I was a teenager. So I really just started doing it for fun and posting the scanned images on Instagram, and out of nowhere brands started reaching out to me to start shooting stuff for them with my friends. It snowballed from there! I quit my makeup agency 2 years ago and never looked back!  Describe your style in 3 words. Instead of 3 words I would say a mix of 3 icons… 60’s Cher, Cher Horowitz a la Clueless, and Jane Fonda in Klute.  You’ve got a real love for polaroids and film - Where did that come from? My love for Polaroids began when I was a teenager in California. I used to take tons of Polaroids of my teen boyfriend/first love - He was truly my first muse. I would even force him to let me put makeup on him. He was a beauty! I also grew up in a house that was obsessed with the 60’s and 70’s. Most of my favorite music and style is from those decades and I'm very much influenced by that time. I am very old school in a lot of ways. I read actual books (no kindle for me), I DJ with records mainly, and I shoot only with film, polaroids, and super 8. I just really love the quality and texture of film, and you get cool surprises with film too like light leaks and weird grainy effects. I think it’s just more interesting.    Biggest inspiration when it comes to doing a shoot? A lot of things inspire my shoots. I am really inspired by old films and icons of the past. The brand and the clothes I’m shooting obviously inspire the vibe and who I cast and where I shoot. The subjects hugely inspire how I shoot them. Casting is super important to me. I typically only shoot friends or people I know. I never go through modelling agencies. I like to have a relationship with the people I shoot. I think it’s important that we are having fun and are comfortable and vibe well together, because it's just me - No team. I style and do the hair and makeup most of the time!    Where are you based? I will officially be living in LA in February! I still don’t have a place but I have been living in Beachwood Canyon by the Hollywood sign for the past few months. It is such a dream. Ideally I would like to get a place there! I have been going back and forth between NYC and LA all year, but I have been living in NYC since 2004! It’s the end of an era. I can’t believe I am moving to LA - To be honest, I am such a New Yorker. I am from Long Beach, CA, originally, so its kind of a homecoming for me. I really fell in love with Los Angeles this year and never felt that way about it before. It is beautiful and chill.  I just think its the perfect place for me to be for where I am at in my life right now and where my work is going. My work is much more 1960’s/1970’s Los Angeles than New York. The light and the locations really suit my vibe! I also have sooo many dear friends there and my family... It just feels right!    View this post on Instagram A post shared by kristingallegos (@kristingallegos) on Jun 12, 2018 at 12:00pm PDT     What’s a typical day in the life of Kristin look like? A typical day in my life lately has been waking up early (which I never used to be able to do) and meditating to start my day off right, having a cup of coffee and breakfast, and mentally getting ready for my day. I always try to be super productive and even if I am not working that day I am doing office work. I work as my own agent so I am always working on getting new clients and setting up shoots for myself, plus prepping for shoots. I always need to keep busy, so you'll even see me running errands and meeting up with friends/potential clients. I am also quite social and I DJ on the side so my evenings are often spent going to events, dinners or parties. I do enjoy chilling out a lot too and reading or watching TV. I am friends with a ton of musicians so I go to a lot of shows to support my friends. New York life and LA are a bit different though. NYC is a lot more social and spontaneous, and LA you really have to make proper plans and make more effort to hang out with people.    A well-known Kristin saying and why. I say ‘Serenity Now!’ a lot which is a Seinfeld reference. It's definitely my favorite show of all time and I reference it constantly with my friends. So whenever I am stressed or going through it I usually say that as a joke.  Tell us about the shoot with Z berg and Nick.  The shoot with Z Berg and Nick Hinman was a blast! They are good friends of mine and are both amazing musicians (they're in a band together called 'Palm Springsteen')!  Nick is also a model and Z has solo stuff out and used to be in the band The Like. They were so much fun to shoot! We shot at this old school bowling alley, Shatto Lanes (in Nick’s neighbourhood).  We bowled a game. Z and I were terrible and Nick is basically a pro. We then borrowed my friend Harrison’s old Cutlass from the 60’s and shot inside and outside of the car and then in front of one of my favorite old Hollywood Motels, The Harvard House Motel. It has the coolest signage! Overall it was an amazing day!   2019 resolutions/goals/plans/something you want to speak out into existence... I have so many resolutions and goals for 2019! First of all, I am relocating so that is a huge deal for me. I want to find my dream apt/house this year. I want to get my first photo agent. I am going to be launching a zine project that I have been working on in the next couple of months with dear friends of mine, the band 'Blame Candy', which is very exciting. After that launches I will begin working on a proper book project and my next photo show. I also started meditating again recently and it has been life changing so I really want to stick to that because it helps me so much in everything that I do. Plus the usual resolutions of getting in better shape, eating healthier, less drinking etc!  SHOP THE SHOOT NOW     SHOOT CREDITS: Photographer: Kristin Gallegos @kristingallegos  Models: Z Berg @zeezerizer and Nick Hinman @yung_avocado of the band Palm Springsteen @palmspringsteen

INTRODUCING: FLYING MACHINE 🔥

INTRODUCING: FLYING MACHINE 🔥

Today’s a special day for us at Thrills HQ. We are proud to introduce you to our mates, Flying Machine, and their debut single “This Feeling”. Hear the wizardry that is the Byron Bay 3 piece below:     With 2/3 of the band currently spending their 9-5 in the office with us we have been lucky enough to watch them grow over the past year and a half, and we can tell you firsthand they possess more musical talent than our entire office combined. Alright, that might not be saying much as we struggle to make a triangle hum, but trust us these guys are sick and they’re only just getting started.     We recently queried them about their inspiration for the track and they figured it might be easier to show us rather than tell. They have put together a killer playlist to help you get inside their heads.     They will be hitting the road later this year and have a debut album due not long after that, make sure you get well acquainted with these guys because you won’t want to miss it.   Artwork by @goodvermin

On the Road with Pist Idiots

On the Road with Pist Idiots

Photo by James Adams.   Jack, Joe, Tom and John -  The Pist Idiots. We could almost end the interview there... But we won’t.   A more fitting band name might not exist, and as you guessed, there’s more to the Revesby (that’s West Sydney for anyone who doesn't know) locals than just drinking beers and playing music; Although they really are great at both. If you’ve made it to a live show already, you would have seen the sweat, spit and smiles. Something you may not be privy to, however, is just how drunk they can be... We mean it, these guys can drink like your dad at Christmas time, all day and all night, and still manage to belt their way through a chaotic but (mostly) flawless set. They’re somewhat of an enigma, in this regard being that the band are still in their early twenties. Sadly though, despite their youthful kidneys and fatherly demeanour it sounds as though they will have their work cut out for them if they wish to try and out drink Australian punk legends The Cosmic Psycho’s when they hit the road to tour this weekend.   Photo by Kane Grosvenor.   We caught them for a quick chat en-route to Byron before the tour kicks off, this is what we learnt: Tell the people a little bit about yourselves, who’s in the band and what’s everyone’s roles? Four bulldogs out of the South West suburbs of Revesby (in Sydney). Our wordsmith and guitarist “Sniff” (Jack) fronts the band, backed up by the tomato brothers Joe and Tom on lead guitar and bass, and “Belton John” on drums. I thought Joe and Tom were the same person for a very long time. What does everyone do for a living outside of the band?  Ahaha all ordinary hairy blokes. Sniff fills his time doing odd jobs but rest assured he is very busy. Johnny works for Grifter Brewing Co as a logistics transport expert. Joe is a landscape architect and tom is an educator. So John and Tom are a truck driver and teacher respectively? Yeah Johnny drives beer around and Tommy teaches the kids. Was there any bands out in West Sydney that inspired you when you first started playing? There wasn’t much exposure to any live music where we grew up, so we were pretty clueless to it all. No one was doing it and we had no plans to start gigging. Our first show was a joke for an open mic night at the local and it took off from there and didn’t stop. Yeah right, how did you get inspired to play music then, who were you watching? We were watching Sydney icons Palms and The Pinheads around that time definitely sparked up an interest into the Aussie music scene. You’re just about to kick off a tour with Cosmic Psychos, that’s a pretty solid achievement for any young Aussie punk band. Have you played shows with Cosmic Psychos before? Is it a solid tick off the bucket list? Yeah we’re wrapped it’s gonna be huge! We’ve only flirted with them on the Instagram, but yeah it’s a massive tick to be able to rip the shit with some Aussie legends who’ve done the rounds.       What was your first tour and who with? How did it come about? Our first lot of dates was a run up the east coast with Melbourne-band Jurassic Nark. It came about from a chance encounter with the Sniffers (Amyl and the Sniffers), Dec Martin in a back ally in Newtown. We passed around three passion pop bottles and warm long neck and the rest is history. We gave you a pretty decent wrap on your ability to keep it together when you're drinking… Is anybody in the band an exception to this rule? We’re all the exception on our day, but there’s a pretty serious case coming from the two brothers. Any examples? Various accounts of naughty behaviour. An unnamed member woke up with a $500 fine in his pocket last week and no memory of how it got there. Alright I guess we’ll leave that one there. We included the video for your latest track “Smile” and your latest EP “Princes”, obviously we’re huge fans of everything you do, have you got any more tours upcoming for anybody who misses this one? We’re road hogging around the country with The Chats this summer playing a heap of co-headline shows in rural towns and all the cities. Most importantly when can we expect a full length? Your gonna have to hold on for the full length. There’s an EP in the works that we’ve been slogging away at, so keep an ear out for that. Final question, how many heart logo shirts do you think you’ve sold so far? Will you ever stop? Millions, No.
