AT HOME WITH OUR WOMEN'S DESIGNER, SERENA

AT HOME WITH OUR WOMEN'S DESIGNER, SERENA

We hope you're staying safe during these crazy times. Now, more than ever, we're doing our best to stay as connected as possible. THRILLS has, and always will be, a family business, and you're a part of that family which is why we're opening up about what's happening in our homes while in isolation; what's getting us through our days, what we're consuming, and of course what pieces we're wearing. Meet our Women's Designer, Serena. Shop Serena's 'At Home' essentials now. Serena wears the Canyon Jean. CAN YOU GIVE US A ROUND-UP OF WHAT YOU DO AT THRILLS? I work closely with the Creative Director & Co-Founder, Tabitha, designing the Women’s ranges. I then follow the garments through development and production. Day-to-day that means; chatting with our suppliers, drawing in illustrator, undertaking fittings, helping out on photoshoots, collaborating with friends of Thrills and all the other fun bits n’ bobs. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT QUARANTINE LOOKS LIKE FOR YOU RIGHT NOW? For the most part, it’s not affected us too much. I’m a bit of an introvert so I’ve loved the extra time at home and we’ve felt pretty remote and cut off from all the craziness in our little house on the hill. Life is definitely slower and we’re spending more time doing the things we get really psyched on. We’ve become super appreciative of the simplest things; a beautiful home, great jobs, each other, delish food, the beach. I hope that perspective persists as the world starts to open back up.  ANY KIND OF ISO ROUTINE HAPPENING? Iso has me having the best sleeps of my life, so I’m usually up with the sun, a little meditation on good days, on not so good days a social media & news binge…gotta keep up with all the conspiracy theories! Maybe a walk at our local beach before locking into a day of work from home. After work we try to play some guitar, take a stroll around the property or a poke around our little veggie patch…something to make it feel like the workday is over. I find cooking really grounding so there’s lots of delicious food & pour-over coffee flowing. WHO ARE YOU QUARANTINING WITH? AND WHERE? I’m bunkered down with my magical boyfriend, Poppi. We live in a gorgeous little hempcrete studio on a property in the hills, inland of Lennox Head. Thanks to quarantine, we’ve made friends with the disgruntled resident goat, Nathan, so I’ll count him in too. WHAT’RE YOUR TIPS FOR STAYING SANE? Learn something new - I’m deep in Acoustic for Country on the Fender guitar app. Also geeking out on MoMA’s free online courses on art, photography & fashion. Find a little sunny patch, read a book, play some good tunes & soak up some Vitamin D. Heck, eat a banana & some chocolate while you’re at it. Hopefully, some happy hormones will percolate through your brain. Let yourself get bored… creativity and innovation will ensue! These are some crazy times and a rainbow of feelings are being felt. Reach out if you’re a tad out of sorts. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WEARING? Some comfy pants and a singlet or oversized tee and I’m happy. Our Carpenter Pant has been a favourite and the Canyon is a wardrobe staple for me.   I’ve also been living in my boyfriend's shirts. They’re the garment equivalent to a big warm hug. Shop Serena's 'At Home' essentials now. Serena wears the Canyon Jean. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO? Our 2+ year Country obsession has still been lurking around, a little Krautrock and some 80s Punk along with a sprinkle Kosmiche & Disco thrown in for spice.  Here’s a mish-mash of country angels, powerful boss beauties and a bounty of bop-worthy baselines that I’ve thrown together. Click to listen now, or check it out below. ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE WATCHING? We've gone down a bit of a documentary wormhole lately. Might be missing human connections more than I thought! Country Music, Ken Burns Lil Peep: Everybody’s Everything Dark Waters - Not a documentary but based on true events and a great watch so I’m sneaking it in I’m feeling drawn to strong creative women this close to Mumma’s day so these are on my to-watch list this week: Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present Kusama: Infinity  Joan Didion: The Centre Will Not Hold  Shop Serena's 'At Home' essentials now.

MOTHER'S DAY WITH OUR THRILLS MUMS

MOTHER'S DAY WITH OUR THRILLS MUMS

For Mother's Day this year, we wanted to feature some of the most incredible women we know: Our Thrills mums. We're forever thankful for who they are and the strength they show, especially through current times. They've inspired us greatly, so what better time to introduce them and find out a little more of how they're maintaining a good work-life balance during COVID-19. Shop gifts for mum online now. MEET TAB My name is Tabitha McGregor and I am a co-founder and creative director for Thrills. My husband, Brooke and I started Thrills 10 years ago when our second child was born. We have two boys: Ace and Bowie. Growing a business with two young babies was definitely challenging, but now as our kids grow bigger and our team grows stronger, we are so unbelievably lucky. The juggle is real, having kids and a business, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Tab wears the Impala Sunglasses. Life before COVID-19 was a bit of a zoo... so much overseas travel, kids school performances, meetings, domestic flights, juggle juggle juggle….We were all existing in a frantic, busy, jam-packed lifestyle. Life is quite different now, during COVID. We made a conscious choice to self-isolate in a small fishing village where the beaches are mostly empty. We are finally slowing down, cooking our meals, beach walks, snorkelling and surfing. Homeschooling has its challenges, but we are deciding to focus on our little family, knowing we’ll never get this special, slow time back. Because Brooke and I are both working from home, the kids are becoming more involved in learning the creative process of designing collections, concepting creative for marketing and doing fun ‘home’ photoshoots. It's not always smooth sailing, but we’re making it work! I can’t imagine a world without my children. They have opened my heart in ways I could never imagine. Being a mum makes me want to be a better person. It makes me feel humbled. It makes me feel strong and truly loved. Tab wears the Classic Rib Tank. MEET OLIVIA I’m pretty fresh to this Mum thing, our daughter Aemilia is just 5 months now and I’ve taken some time out from work to be with her. I work in design and production, which is how I met Emi’s incredible Dad, Ryan...who is a Co-Founder and the Managing Director of Thrills.   Life during COVID-19 has been bittersweet, and I think that’s the case for everyone. Life has slowed right down, which is a huge change for me but was inevitable with a newborn. Watching the different approaches taken by business, individuals and greater society to navigate such unchartered waters have been interesting, to say the least, and I am confident that we will come out the other side stronger. For a lot of people, these big life events have a way of putting things into perspective, but I hope that we can all maintain our appreciation for simplicity in the future, and use this as a reminder of the importance of social connection. Perhaps we will spend some more time away from our devices and enjoying the great outdoors with the people we love. Olivia wears the Painter Coverall. For me, being a mum has been a natural progression, born out of the incredible love for my partner. Seeing this smiling, laughing little human just reminds me of the incredible gift we were given to expand our family and collectively love more deeply than ever before, and that goes for all of us... even our dog (she just doesn’t know it yet!). MEET SAM I landed in this beautiful part of the world almost 5 years ago after travelling around Australia with the kids and hubby in a caravan – escaping Sydney’s rat race. I joined the Thrills family as their accountant and have loved being part of their journey. It is a pretty great crew to work for and with. Life has slowed down a little during amidst COVID-19. My husband and I are well versed at the home-schooling thing after almost a year in the caravan and the kids are coping pretty well. I am enjoying spending my commuting time in the garden. Having lunch together around the kitchen table every day is something I will miss. It is all back to basics. Knock off time involves table tennis, bike rides, baking, gardening and good old-fashioned climbing trees. When my youngest was only little he once asked me to do something for him when I had my hands full. I yelled – “I can’t, I’m not an octopus, I only have two hands”. A few months later we were talking about what superpowers we would have if we could only pick one (a common conversation with a house full of boys). I said I would pick flying. He replied that he thought I would pick “being an octopus”, which totally confused me – “Why”? To which he replied, “so you could do everything for me”. Being a mum to me means focusing on people other than yourself. Making sure my 2 little humans are happy and healthy. There are a lot of balls to keep in the air with working full time and being a mum but we have some crazy times together and a lot of laughs.   MEET CARLY I have been a part of the Thrills family for 3 and a half years as the International Wholesale Sales Coordinator. I’m also a Mum of 2 beautiful girls, Sadie & Daisy, and have another one on the way. I put my tribe first. Family is everything and I love sticking by old school principles. Those who know me know I’m fearless and adventurous - if I feel fear, I do it anyway. I don’t shrink back from challenges. On a less serious note, I LOVE to party! When COVID-19 first hit, we all had to adapt to life at home while trying to complete work and schooling but we have now found a good balance & routine while appreciating one another during this time we have all together. My motto is to take one day as it comes and try and see this as Mother Nature telling us to slow life down. I’m now moving at a much healthier pace which is feeding off to the rest of my family.   Most think being a mum/parent is all about teaching the child, the lesson I have learnt is to also learn from them. I have made this journey also about myself growing. Being a Mum gives me the strength to bear the load of life and have the ability to carry on and do what needs to be done. I love giving my girls what my Mum gave me, unconditional LOVE and a life full of fun experiences.   MEET BIANCA My name is Bianca. I grew up near Bells Beach in Victoria. Now living on the Gold Coast and working as a Design Assistant at Thrills for the last 3 years. I am a Taurus, an animal lover and, like many of our team, I loveee a good coffee! I’m currently working from my home on the Gold Coast along with my partner Chris, our 1-year-old son Alfie and our two lazy bulldogs! Lately, we've been getting up before work and riding our bikes up to the beach. Grabbing a coffee to support our local cafe. Chris has been doing daddy daycare while I work during the day then we usually try to go for another walk or ride once I finish work. I feel so much better after getting some fresh air! The biggest lesson I've learnt as a mum is not to sweat the small stuff. As long as Alfie is happy and healthy that’s all that matters to me. Also, I appreciate my own Mum even more now since becoming a mother myself. Being a mum is more than I could have ever imagined.. I know it sounds very cliché but it's honestly been the best time of my life and I feel so lucky to wake up to Alfie’s cheeky grin every morning. MEET NAT My name is Natalie and my hubby to be is the Men's designer at Thrills. Our life is pretty busy at the best of times, with a combined family with our four kids, Chance, Kaiya, Chloe and Mila, but like most, we make the most of the craziness. Right now I am juggling working from home as a brand manager of a women's label and homeschooling. It has been a pretty surreal experience, we were in LA in March and returned to Australia to quarantine at home. To think that five weeks ago we were sitting in an airport with no social distancing measures in place just feels so foreign now. The situation escalated so quickly! I suppose we kind of just adapt... we are so lucky to live where we live, with daily beach swims and bike rides, it has actually been really nice to slow down and appreciate these special moments.    If there's one thing I've learnt about being a mum, it's having patience, with yourself, with others, although without a doubt I haven't mastered this one yet. I couldn't imagine life any differently than being a mum. It means the world to me to be surrounded by such a loving family, our children, our nieces and nephew's and watching them all grow, I love the laughter, the craziness and their funny little personalities! MEET MEGAN I'm a mum, amongst other things... but mostly a mum to three sensational girls and one very rolly polly puppy. I'm also the new Creative Director at Eye of Horus, a beauty brand here in Byron Bay. Nourishing, plant-based food is a genuine passion of mine. So is reading. And I'm married to Mike - your Design Manager, we've been together since I was 20 (!!). We met when I travelled from my California home many, many moons ago.   Life is rad right now. I love the unconventional living and working arrangements, sitting side-by-side with Mike in our make-shift home office is awesome, he makes me coffee. And being with the girls is just fun - I love the togetherness of it all. Sometimes the walls start to cave but that's when I head to the beach for a new perspective, it doesn't take much. Being a mum presents the unknown on the reg anyway so when we hit that feeling of calm or 'balance', it's usually fleeting. So I guess we go with the flow, make sure everyone is fed properly, have plenty of books and activities to play and our pup - Rexy helps a lot, he's the ideal pseudo-mum on my workdays when I need big blocks of time to be productive. The best lesson I've learnt as a mum is to be in the moment, stay present - it's best for everyone. As soon as you have expectations and start thinking "oh - I have to do that" or "I really want to do this" that's when things get tricky plus time goes in a flash and you really don't want to look back and feel you've missed out. But ultimately, the girls have taught me that love is infinite and children come to you with nothing but pure, genuine zest and I have learnt to relish in that, to take a few lessons from them. Being a mum is the greatest honour and gift. Also - that I have a part in raising the next-gen, so we aim to practice kindness, empathy and making a positive impact on our environment. We have a saying - "Be kind, but take no shit."  From all of us here at Thrills, we hope you have an incredible Mother's Day. Shop gifts for mum online now.

AT HOME WITH OUR MARKETING MANAGER, NAT

AT HOME WITH OUR MARKETING MANAGER, NAT

We hope you're staying safe during these crazy times. Now, more than ever, we're doing our best to stay as connected as possible. THRILLS has, and always will be, a family business, and you're a part of that family which is why we're opening up about what's happening in our homes while in isolation; what's getting us through our days, what we're consuming, and of course what pieces we're wearing. Meet our Marketing Manager, Nat. Can you give us a round-up of what you do at THRILLS? I’m not even sure that we have official job titles, but I guess I look after our creative & marketing department. We have a small team of 4 including myself, so there are a few different hats to be worn. Our little crew handles the end-to-end conceptualisation, production and delivery of our creative content - From campaign shoots to event production and everything in between. Oh and I also shoot and edit all of the video content, and have more recently been enjoying crossing over into photography as well. It’s a diverse job role, and no two days are ever the same - Which keeps things pretty interesting. Can you tell us about what quarantine looks like for you right now? I wouldn’t say that I’m a conspiracy theorist, but I definitely have a healthy level of scepticism when it comes to matters of governmental control, so naturally, at first I wasn’t over the moon about being forcibly imprisoned in my own home - But as time has rolled on, it’s seemingly become quite normal. It’s all about finding some positives in the downtime, and I’ve actually been enjoying the slower pace and catching up on different things that I haven’t had enough time for in recent years. I’m definitely looking forward to getting a little bit of freedom back, but it is what it is and we’re doing our bit. We’re pretty fortunate here in the Byron Shire - Our beaches are still open and there’s easy access to get outdoors and enjoy nature or whatever, so I’m not complaining. We’ve been busy with work too, so there is that level of normality in my day to day - I’m definitely not sitting around wondering how to fill in time. I sure as hell miss the pub though. Any kind of ISO routine happening? We’re working from home, but we’re still working, so that’s the obvious one - Other than that I don’t really have a set routine. For me starting the day early and getting out of the house has been important. It’s usually just a drive to the beach for a surf or even just a swim, but it makes a big difference and sets the mood for the rest of the day. Besides that, I’ve just been trying to stay busy. I tend to think that the less you do, the less you feel like doing so I’ve just been trying to keep the mind active. Oh and we’ve been putting in some time in the garden, in preparation for the real apocalypse. Who are you quarantining with? And where? I’ve been quarantining with my girlfriend Lani and our little black cat, Tenshi. We’ve got the dream set up for isolation. We rent a little cottage in the rainforest about half an hour out of Byron. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’re on a lot of land with no neighbours which makes it really easy to switch off from all the madness. What’re your tips for staying sane? As I mentioned, we’re pretty lucky that we’re still able to get out and enjoy the outdoors, so I can’t even pretend to comprehend how tough it would be in a city where you’re more or less confined to the living room. I’m also not qualified to give tips to anyone, about anything - But seeing as though you’re asking -  They say it takes 7 years to truly master a skill, and theoretically this quarantine song and dance can’t possibly go on for longer than say, 12 months - So technically you don’t have too much time on your hands, you actually don’t even have enough - But, We live in the Information Age and it’s all at your fingertips - So think long and hard, there’s got to be something that you’ve always had an interest in that you’ve never had the chance to pursue. Work out what that is and immerse yourself. Now’s the time to expand your knowledge. Alternatively, I’m a bit of a space nerd so my other suggestion would be to go down that rabbit hole of research and contemplate the Universe for a couple of months - Being stuck inside might not seem like such a significant problem when you realise how insignificant you really are. That was a joke by the way. That sounds like a recipe for insanity. Don’t do that. What have you been wearing? My uniform hasn’t really changed. Black jeans, black t-shirt, black hoodie or jacket if I get cold. It’s better that way, no one can tell how dirty my clothes are. What have you been listening to? Ahh geez. It all depends on mood. There’s the whole metal category and every sub-genre within, then there’s obviously a bit of punk in the mix too. But I also love funk and soul as well, so it’s all over the place. The only category I haven’t really been touching in ISO is rap. Not because I don’t like rap, I actually don’t know why there hasn’t been any rap in rotation. Maybe planting vegetables just doesn’t feel that baller. Any recommendations on what the people should be watching? I actually haven’t seen much new stuff since being in ISO.  But I do love a good movie, so maybe I’ll just suggest some of my faves. Autoluminescent - Great documentary about Australian music legend Rowland S. Howard Last Days Here - Another music doco. This one is about the rise (sorta), fall, and then rise (sorta) of Bobby Liebling - Front man of Pentagram. This one will leave you wondering how the hell he is still alive and making music. And also make you never want to do crack. Into the Universe with Steven Hawking - One for my fellow space lovers. True Romance - Written by Quentin Tarantino but directed by Tony Scott. 90’s cinematic gold. Natural Born Killers - Also written by Quentin Tarantino and Directed by Oliver Stone - This came out a year after True Romance. The ’90s was the true golden age of cinema. Anything from the David Lynch catalogue - This is a great time killer. You’ll spend hours watching the films and then spend hours afterwards wondering what the hell David Lynch was on about.

When emotions run high, or it all gets too much, I go sit in my car and blast music as loud as possible…. it's my reset button. Wine also helps…hehe. Tab wears the Classic Rib Tank. At Home with our Co-Founder, Brooke

Meet our Co-Founder, Brooke.  Can you give us a round-up of what you do at THRILLS? Co-Founder and Brand Director. My role oversees our brand's direction both creatively as well as through distribution. I am very lucky as I get to work closely with many departments, but my main focuses are overseeing men’s design, directing each seasonal collection and working in closely with marketing creatively on a conceptual level pushing the boundaries on what is possible, who we can collaborate with and what music events we create. I also work closely with our sales force both domestically and internationally working in with retailers to ensure our brand is performing well.  Tell us a bit about what quarantine looks like for you right now. At first, it was pure mayhem, I’d been overseas and returned home to what felt like the end of the world. As everything began to settle down and establish a 'new normal’ some light came into the darkness in the form of my two beautiful kids and amazingly supportive wife who founded THRILLS with me and designs/creatively directs the women's side of the business. Quarantine has actually been a special time for our family to reconnect after a crazy few years of business building. Any kind of ISO routine happening? Wake up, check socials and scan emails over breakfast. Beach walk, surf (good time of year in the water up here) then hit the emails and phone. I’ve been off the booze for a month so I stay busy till it’s time to Netflix and chill. Who are you quarantining with? And where? Tabitha, Ace (11 yr old son) and Bowie (9 yr old son). We’re down the coast at the moment and simplifying life since I returned from overseas in our little beach shack in a remote fishing village. What’re your tips for staying sane? Sanity is a full-time job at the best of times for me. My brain works at high speeds and unusual frequencies. I’m more worried about the sanity of the people around me. My tips would be to be kind to each other and be kind to yourself. This too shall pass. What have you been wearing? Oversized everything… soft fabrications… straight-up loungewear. Shop Brooke's 'At Home' essentials now. What have you been listening to? Oh man…. I’m a tragic wannabe disk jockey. My taste is eccentric, to say the least, I’m talking anything from 90s obscure rap, metal, funk and everything in between. But over the past few weeks, the mood has been directing me towards lots of blues, groove and soul. Listen to Brooke's ISO Spotify playlist now:   Any recommendations on what the people should be watching? I’ve always had a strange obsession with the ‘Juice' so the last thing I watched was The People vs OJ Simpson…. And after you're done with that, anything with Chevy Chase, Fletch Lives, Spies like Us, Three Amigos, Caddy Shack. My underground favourite is Funny Farm. We just finished Ozark on Netflix and are on the last season of Homeland on SBS on demand.  Shop Brooke's 'At Home' essentials now.

Good news incoming. We recently teamed up with the one and only Jason Lee Parry to photograph the very punk, very alternative, very alien LA-based band Cumgirl8 to feature our new Organic Cotton denim styles. The concept for the shoot was simple: the girls were hanging out in an LA recording studio so we decided to drop in and be a fly on the wall while they did what they do best. Call us nosey, but we're genuinely curious to see what’s been going on behind closed doors. Enter, Alex from Bad Dreems to help us figure out just how to ride out the quarantine wave. ALEX: We were about halfway into a tour of the UK and Europe when it became clear that we had to pull the pin and return home. The previous week and a half had been a disquieting time, as we woke up every morning to more bad news from around the world. Fortunately, we were able to get home relatively easily and return to our respective homes for the mandated 14 days of quarantine. ALEX: Ben and Ali decamped to Pine Point in SA; while Miles and Tom Stevens (who had filled in on bass for this tour) went back to the house they share in Richmond, VIC. I had actually developed some symptoms on the flight, so was advised to go to the hospital to get tested. I did this and then started my quarantine all alone at my house in Bendigo. To be honest, quarantine/self-isolation is pretty much my ideal mode of living. Tomorrow my time is up and it feels a little like the end of the school holidays, with returning to work. My test came back as negative in the end. RECORDING ALEX: I spent most of my time recording ideas for our new album. The hours just slip away, especially in these early phases of creation. It was a luxury to have time to fully immerse without distraction. We had made some demos in London with Rory Attwell, who used to be in mid-2000s band Test Icicles. BOOKS ALEX: I re-read The Plague. Camus is probably my favourite author. People say the novel is an allegory for Vichy France, but re-reading it in the milieu it seems a very accurate description of something similar to what we are experiencing. After that I’ve variously been reading Camus’ Exile and the Kingdom (short stories), Gerald Murnane’s A History of Books (which I can’t make head nor tail of) and the Larkin and Borges poetry books.   FILMS ALEX: Leuchtturm Des Chaos (Pharos of Chaos) - A 1983 West German documentary about Sterling Hayden, an American actor from the Hollywood “Golden Era”, who was one of many affected by McCarthyism. It mainly consists of an interview in which he smokes hash gets progressively drunker. Compelling character, but. Chimes of Freedom - Orson Welles piece de resistance which he directed and starred as. Incredible battle scene. Of Mics and Men - Wu-Tang Forever. MUSIC ALEX: Screaming Believers - Great pop records from 80s Adelaide. Should be better known. Murder Most Foul - Dylan. If you don't like this sell your Dylan albums and fuck off. Iggy Pop - New Values. This 3rd solo album is as good as the first two but not as well known. Stephen Malkmus - Traditional Techniques.  Snowy Band - Audio Commentary. Prob Aus Album of the Year by the Wagga Wunderkid. Robert Fripp's - League of Gentleman. Fripp's post-punk album. PLAGUE BUDDIES ALEX: It's such a strange time, especially having been in the touring bubble for two weeks and then quazza. I've talked to other people who are locked down, like the band. Some cope better than others. It's been good to touch base with old friends, many of whom have lost their income and are faced with great uncertainty. It's been hard to sit around helpless and see friends and loved ones struggling to keep their businesses alive. Like we saw in the bushfires, I think this crisis will bring out the best in us as a community. It'll be good to get out tomorrow and help however I can.  Health be with you. - Alex.
