LIQUID IDIOTS EP 1: APPLE PIE COCKTAIL

It’s the festive season, and we all know what that means.. Time spent with family, the giving and receiving of gifts, a time to unwind and reflect on the year that was.….I joke. It means drinking. Lots & lots of drinking. And if there’s one thing we’ve learnt about our good friends Jack (Liquid Face) and Jack (Pist Idiots) over the years, it’s that they’re really bloody good at drinking. So good in fact that the Jacks have taken it upon themselves to jump the bar and give you a little bit of cocktail Inspo for your silly season - Proving in the process that being able to knock back a couple yourself doesn’t necessarily make you handy with a shaker. So without further adieu, I present to you what will no doubt be your new favourite cook(ed)ing show: LIQUID IDIOTSIn this first instalment we get the scoop on just how to (or more accurately, how not to) make an Apple Pie Cocktail.

Meredith Music Festival - A bloody good way to welcome summer

Meredith Music Festival - A bloody good way to welcome summer

Summer in Australia is a bloody good time for more reasons than we can be bothered to list here. I mean it is hot, really damn hot, the days are long, the waves are good, the beers are cold, everyone is usually in a pretty good mood.  And to top it off there are a plethora of music festivals, it is almost stressful to think about how you are going to manage it all.

THE ESCAPE

THE ESCAPE

There’s something about the idea of the “escape”; A romantic desire to drop it all and head full speed into the unknown. Summertime, more than any, draws this desire to the surface. It starts as a small inkling and grows into a raging beast, but what is in the escape? Is a day enough, or do you need weeks? Do you set a destination and turnaround once you’ve reached it or do you keep going until you’ve lost track of the beginning? Whatever the result or the reason there’s no refusing it when it emerges. For most, viewing the world as it flies by from the safety of a car is enough, and it should be, you are free, your worries left behind you your escape is in full flight – For others they want the wind on their face to smell the air and feel the temperature change as the road dips or you cross a river. This… this can only be felt from behind the handlebars. The moments that others miss are the ones that keep you going, no music, no conversation, the sound of the engine drowns everything else out. It’s here the desire grows, until your 40-year-old bike breaks down, in a field, with nothing and no-one around, maybe romantics isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Shop the shoot now.

Green farms, green beers and green faces – Mini Skirt & Liquid Face give New Zealand a short & sweet hit of Australian noise.

Green farms, green beers and green faces – Mini Skirt & Liquid Face give New Zealand a short & sweet hit of Australian noise.

Australian tourists are the worst. Ozzie travellers can be found making nuisances of themselves in all corners of the world - Bali, Thailand, America, Europe and everywhere in between, Australians flock en mass to run amok and piss hostel beds.  If you join a band you might even be lucky enough to travel and piss the bed under the guise of art – or at least slip it under the rug as collateral damage as a requirement of your job, we (Mini Skirt) took full advantage of this luxury on our most recent jaunt overseas. Obviously I use the term job very loosely as any consideration of us as professionals is laughable, but still, my point is Thrills sent us overseas recently to play some music with our good mates Liquid Face and we had an almost disgustingly good time doing so. Given the amount of shit that went wrong on this trip, we are so god damn lucky we didn’t try and make it to any of the long haul locations listed above – I guess we must be smarter than we look, we know our own incapabilities and we know not to test them. So, being the smart bunch we are, we found our own fun right here in our (almost) own back yard - we went to New Zealand baby! Yep, you heard it, New Zealand, the land of the long white cloud, the home of the Kiwi’s, Hobbiton, Middle Earth and let me tell you - what a place it is. Mini Skirt first came to NZ on a last-minute tour about 3 years ago with Melbourne mates Dumb Punts and Charging Stallion, we had so much fun on this trip that we ended up forming our own Australian version of it a year or so later, we added a bigger bus and the sweetest men in Australian Music Pist Idiots and called it The Coin Toss Tour. This tour nearly broke us in every conceivable way and we somehow made it through with our livers, jobs and relationships still intact but that’s probably a story for another time. As I said before I started getting nostalgic, we had been to NZ before and had been talking about going back almost every month since, when Thrills came to us and said they wanted to throw a party over there for Amazon Surf Shop (not those big fancy online retail guys) we dove right in, we turned it into 3 shows, Auckland, Raglan and Tauranga - a bunch of shit happened, (New Zealand weather reports lie) and we decided to cancel the 3rd show. As I said a lot of shit went wrong – we hadn’t even left the country yet and the wheels were falling off. I’ll just get all the negatives out of the way now and we’ll get back to the fun stuff, Botched car bookings, shit phone plans and shit phones, lost guitars, food poisoning, roadside spews, fights at shows, fights on the street, unreliable weather reports and fucking U2  playing a show in Auckland the same night meaning that the entire country (like 45 people or some shit) were trying to find a place to stay too – I’ve always believed that Bono personally had it in for me and this was about all the proof I needed. The first show was at Whammy Bar in Auckland – if you’ve never been Whammy is about as good a venue as you can get, it’s down a pretty swanky little tiled arcade on Karangahape Road and then down 3 flights of stairs in to near oblivion, it’s completely blacked out and as dingy as you could ever want – it’s a rabbit warren if you enter through the back so try and avoid that because we all got split up for a good hour trying to load in which kind of fucked our set times for the night. We were lucky enough to have a brother and sister duo called Grown Downz join us from Tauranga, they opened both shows and were so sick, check them out if you get a chance. If you’ve been to New Zealand or happen to have a few kiwi pals you will know their reputation when it comes to being possibly the nicest bunch of people on the planet – not tonight folks, these kids had well and truly lost the plot. Halfway through Liquid Face’s first set, the place had descended into madness it was all hands, heads and jaws swinging left right and centre. I watched on happily as LF front man Cal burnt up every ounce of his patience when his mike smashed him in the face 10 times in 1 song. The crowd peeled out immediately after that and I started to think we’d be playing to the bartender, but, lo and behold the room filled back in, all somehow twice as “eager” as they were before. We had a fight break out mid-set which sucked, we stopped playing and asked the bouncer to get them out – being in NZ the bouncer was the biggest sweetest Māori guy ever and he dragged them both up the stairs with what looked like one hand – I may be glorifying this but I swear that’s what I saw. We kicked back into our set and; I just typed “sweat” accidentally and I think I’m just going to leave it at that because that’s basically all we did for the last half of our show. After witnessing another fight on the street, most of us bailed home but a dedicated few mosied on up the street to a prominent LGBTQ bar for a spot of Karaoke. The plan for a few wind down drinks post-show skyrocketed after a much-anticipated rendition By Liquid face bass player Jack of Midnight Oil’s “King Of The Mountain”, helped along somewhat by the discovery of a multi-tiered super club in the back of the bar…. Seeing Auckland from sun up to sun up again, we were all pretty keen to get out of the city and take in some of that sweet sweet New Zealand nature. Rolling out of the city our first glimpse of the New Zealand countryside was a big beautiful green mountain range, with a HUGE U2 logo burned into the side of it – you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me!!! With Auckland well and truly ruined by the Irish we raced on down to Raglan, we introduced the LF guys to a driving game we always play that involves guessing songs while drinking beer, we were lacking on the beer so stopped off at what we thought was a bottle shop to grab a case of New Zealand’s finest drop Waikato Draught. It turned out to be a pub, “The Whatawhata Backyard Bar and Eatery” – what a spot! The owner insisted we come in for a beer, we left 30 minutes later 2 schooners up and 5 shirts and stubby holders down – the old guys in the front bar fleeced us for all our merch but we couldn’t say no. From here we headed to a waterfall to do some good old fashioned touristing and a bit of nude swimming in the creek. The countryside on this drive is non-stop beauty, there’s an amazing view just around every bend, and speaking of bends? There is plenty of those little pricks too!! The roads are so windy you’d have even the most iron stomach reaching for the door handle – we had to pull over a couple of times on the drive down and back from Raglan – trust me they’ll get ya! Raglan is a little surf town a few hours south of Auckland, it’s famous for a long left hand wave that breaks a bit of a drive out of the town but it should be famous for the pub and for the Yot Club. The pub is a big double story beauty right in the heart of town, the Yot Club is a tiny little…. “not so beauty” right across the street. You stay at the pub and you play at the Yot Club - what a perfect scenario. When we were here a few years back it happened to land on one of the locals 30th birthday’s which brought about 100 or so people to our show who probably would never have known we existed. By chance or possibly even fate, it turns out we’d done it again, the exact same weekend 2 years later. He turned up to celebrate, again and he brought the same 100 people who had to be reminded who we were, again. If we thought Auckland had gone wild the night before there was no way our hungover asses were ready for Raglan, Cal got hit in the face with the mic so many times he front kicked the guy off the stage, people hung off the rafters, I think about 100 stage dived and we all sweated into the ground again. We wrapped this night up in the same fashion as the one before, most of us went to bed but a few of us stayed on to drink with the world’s most passionate tiki bar owner Andy – I think the sun was close to up before everyone was in bed again. We woke up to a siren @ 5am that morning I thought it was a Tsunami siren, I couldn’t find the van keys and nobody else seemed to care so I had to accept my fate, I was going to die here in a pub hotel room –  it turned out it was just the local firies and that shit happens all the time so nobody cares. We all woke up surprisingly fresh after that, given the cancelled Sunday show we now had a full day of leisure, team Liquid Face sat on the pub balcony with long necks where they stayed until they kicked us off that night, Mini Skirt all went to the beach for a few hours to try and keep up that positive tourist attitude but eventually, the pub balcony got us too. We were due to fly out of Auckland at 1pm on Monday, it seemed fitting to finish up the tour the way we started, a couple of spews, some nice green scenery, 2 cancelled flights, 1 re-scheduled flight to Melbourne that was meant to be to the Gold Coast, another flight to Brisbane and finally, a shuttle back to the Gold Coast at 1am – New Zealand sucked.

Our mates, Bad Dreems, have been doing it all lately, from sold-out tours across the country, a new record and an amazing Triple J Like A Version. We wanted to celebrate their recent successes so we teamed up on this bad boy: a one of a kind collaboration work shirt for the kings of honest Australian rock n roll. Numbers are very limited so you better get in quick for this one.

My Lynyrd Skynyrd T-Shirt keeps getting me in fights - here's their 5 top songs to prove I was in the right

I recently got my hands on a nice old crusty Lynyrd Skynyrd T-shirt. This sassy little number has been quite the bone of contention of late - a real hot pot of controversy. You see I’ve been on the hunt for this particular shirt for a few years and this one had the nerve to just land right in my lap. The shirt in question is a faded black number, it totes a large rip-off Jack Daniels logo on the front (a good start) and has the words “Support Southern Rock” scrawled on the back (as if the Jack Logo wasn’t enough).

An Interview with White Bleaches

An Interview with White Bleaches

By Jacob Pumphrey. Meet our mates, White Bleaches. Hailing from the great coastal town of Torquay, they're a four-piece garage-psych band that has quickly become one of our favourites. I got to sit down with the band to talk all things #tourlife, recording and life back home. Hope you enjoy. This is our first time catching up (shame on us I know) can you fill us in with who we’ve got in the band? Haha all good nice to catch up with you guys! Well. there is Ant who sings and plays guitar, Ty plays lead, Hughey on bass and our newest addition Max on the skins! Who am I talking to? Ant. You guys are based in Melbourne yeah? Are you all from that way? We are actually based on the surf coast, Torquay / Jan Juc to be exact. I'm originally from Melbs but the band started in Jan. Ah, Torquay what a beautiful spot, where are you right now? Mate its gods country! We are just on the plane atm off to Byron for our show at the northern tonight. Weather is looking good! so keen to mack on the beach for a few hours and work on the basey! Is it ice cold or 40 degrees down there? I think today's 40, yesterday was a warm 10 degrees. How’d you all meet / how’d the band come about? All the guys knew each other from around town but we started playing music when I moved down about 9 years ago.. We had another band before this then recruited a new drummer and started White Bleaches. I met ty at work and he was super into metal at the time. Pretty sure he had flying V and everything. It was really hard at the start because we all wanted to play guitar so we had a band of 4 guitarists. When we finally got a gig we all switched instruments every song. It was weird. You dropped us a couple of copies of the newest vinyl a few months back (cheers) - How long have you guys been working on this one? No worries! From recording to release it was a year..but some of the songs on there are like 5 years old and some were written a few weeks before recording. Spit it out was the first time we played it as a band and recorded it in about 5 goes. Where’d you guys record? We record at my folks' place on the Mornington Peninsula. It's an epic little getaway spot we always record at because we are shut off from home and any distractions. How long did it take in total? We recorded the base layers in one weekend then spent time over about 6 months to add all the layers, we figured out this stuff takes a while when everyone's working full time so just did it at a leisurely pace ha.  Who are your biggest influences at the moment/who influenced the album sound? We used to have heaps of influences from all the garage bands in Aus mostly and especially bands from Austin and California. But these days it's just a mix of everything, anything that makes us amped to write and record again. Has this changed much over the years? Is there anyone that stayed consistent? Brian Jonestown will never change It feels like a little while to us, but maybe we’re just impatient... Did it come out on time as planned or were there a few hiccups? Yeah, fair call we just didn't realise how long it would actually take with all the planning and stuff and the time it takes to get the mixes right. Next album will be way quicker just need to find some songs somewhere. Your body of work is starting to look nice and stacked - it had to feel nice to get a full length out? Oh yeah, it was the biggest relief for us after sitting on these songs for so long. Any wise words for any eager newcomers dreaming of getting a full length out? Yeah, don't fool around with too many EPs or seven inches. People's attention span is dwindling these days. Just get the album out ASAP! Then do another one. The tour kicks off tonight in Byron - you guys are playing with our mates The Violent Monks - do you know them? Yeah, they're from Lorne absolute legends! Have you guys played together before? Nah we haven't! We planned on doing this show this time last year haha things just took a little longer than expected. Can't wait to share the stage tonight though its gonna be dooope! I hope your livers are well trained - do you get pretty wild on tour or keep it PG? Nah we have fun for sure, we don't get out that often these days soo.. How do you guys cope with the tour aftermath? Tell the boss we had a quiet one and drink heaps of coffee. What does home life look like for you? Have you guys got full-time work or uni etc? Yeah, All full time working for the man it's sick. Where are you on to from here? Back to Melbs to play at the old bar. Our favourite venue in Melbourne.  Any big plans for the summer music or otherwise? Naaaah hopefully play a gig or two, but just cruising sounds good to me as well. That's all, folks. Make sure to get to one of their last few gigs on tour, or get around their repeat-worthy music here:

An Interview with Tim Swallow

An Interview with Tim Swallow

Let us introduce you to the v talented Tim Swallow. You might recognise some of his work in a few of our campaigns, or also because he's a well-known name around town. Tim's imagery depicts a series of lost worlds in which scenes of spontaneous revelry break out against a backdrop of striking and lurid landscapes. His work is a journey exploring his carefree generation – it is in the sweet liminal zone between music, fashion and a perpetually sun-soaked life that edges on the unashamedly hedonistic, yet unabashed innocence of youth culture. Following the success of Tim's latest Sydney exhibitions 'We Live Today' and its predecessor ‘If We Die Tomorrow’, we offered for him to take the show on the road for a combined exhibition at our new studio space (Black Moon Studio) in Byron Bay. To celebrate the exhibition this Friday, Nat sat down with Tim to ask him a few burning questions. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope to see you there this Friday. RSVP TO THE EVENT NOW. Nat: Timmy Boi! Firstly, congrats on the new show. Sydney looked like it went off. How was it received in ye olde home town? Tim: Thanks, Nat aka 'Batt Boy'. It was great, I got a lot of press and sales. We had roughly 400 through the door on the opening night and another 300 over the weekend. The show was full of laughs, everyone was catching up with new friends and old. I was so exhausted by the end of it all I didn't even make it to my own after-party - That's not to say that everyone else that got there didn't give it a good nudge! Nat: And now we’re bringing the show to Byron - What is your relationship with Byron and what prompted you to bring the show up here?  Tim: Byron was actually the first place I came up with the initial concept for these shows. It was a halcyon afternoon, everyone was feeling it and I had my camera, so I shot it. In saying that - it was the first shoot I'd done in that tone and there was a lot of room for improvement in regards to direction. Nothing was planned, it was just a spontaneous moment. I knew I had an idea to expand on, so I treated it as a learning experience, something to work on and 'If We Die Tomorrow' was born.  After the success of my recent Sydney show 'We Live Today' I was offered the opportunity to exhibit both exhibitions at Black Moon Studio by my good pals at Thrills. I'm excited for Byron to finally see these images in the flesh. I shot two or three concepts up there so it will be cool for people to identify locations and friends involved. Nat: For a fashion photographer not a lot of your talent seem to be wearing much in the way of fashion/anything at all in either this show or your previous. Is minimal clothing something that is premeditated when conceptualising a project like this, or does it happen more organically as each shot comes to life?  Tim: It's pretty much all premeditated. It's a concept, a return to our natural state. There’s a point in time as a child when nudity is completely acceptable, however as we grow as humans we conform and feel totally masked by our inhibitions.  Embracing our surrounds, being present and spontaneous was a huge inspiration. As for the nudity, well... Everything is more fun in the nude. ha The first exhibition 'If We Die Tomorrow' was more spontaneous, yet still planned. 'We Live Today' was finessed yet still buck wild and free. At its heart this is not some hippy shit, it's punk, not necessary in aesthetic but by attitude. A disarming of cultural constraints. Flipping the bird to consumerism and the technical shackles that seem to hold us, and letting go. Nat: A lot of people ask about inspiration within the photography landscape, but what inspires your work outside of photography?  Tim: Surfing, music, art, friends, family and travelling bring me so much joy and inspiration. I couldn't achieve what I do without all of those elements in my life on a day-to-day. Nat: When planning a shoot or shot, there are 2 types of people in this world. There are the people who plan everything down to the most minute detail - And then you have the others, who prefer to wing it and just let the magic happen naturally. Your work seems more about capturing those real life, candid, in-between moments. How detail orientated are you in your planning? Is the personality and real-ness that shines through in your imagery a product of your relaxed & loose shooting style, or is that something that you work hard to create through a calculated approach?  Tim: I'm calculated to a point, times, dates, location, equipment and talent etc. But once we are ready to shoot I drop all expectations, inhibition and concerns. I shoot fast and loose. I embrace what mother nature throws at me whilst on location and shoot the 'bigger' picture when in a studio. I like things to be chaotic yet controlled.  Nat: And lastly, you destroyed my bike creating one of the shots in the show - Will I be reimbursed?  Tim: I'm pretty sure nobody actually owned the bikes in that shoot. So I'll answer your question with another question.  If I was to steal you a bike from the back of Cheeky Monkeys at roughly 3.30am on Sunday morning would we be square? An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a bike for a bike.

The cool girl way to wear maxi dresses

The cool girl way to wear maxi dresses

While summer is already knocking on our doors (and we're SO in the mood for it), Spring is still reminding us to not head out in tops and tees every day just yet. But being us, we've got a few other Spring styling key pieces up our sleeves. We've recently re-discovered our love for one particular wardrobe essential, that is, while giving us the summer moods we're craving, somewhat season-less. Enter maxi dresses. And while we're at it, we'll include midi dresses too, because, let's be honest, the 10cm fabric difference isn't making the biggest difference anymore this late in Spring.
